HBO/WO Internship: Improve a determine setting method.

Since 1996, DAF is part of PACCAR, a global technology leader in the design, manufacture and customer support of Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF trucks. PACCAR also provides financial services and information technology and distributes truck parts to its principal business.

Omschrijving afdeling / Description department:

The DAF Central Laboratory is a part of the Testing department and responsible for testing on a material and process level. It is a multidisciplinary department that investigates material failures, validates new materials and determines material requirements.

Wat ga je doen: / What are you going to do:

Setting, or the reduction of clamping force, occurs in any bolted joint. However when a bolted joint connection is made on painted parts setting is often more severe. A bolted joint which has a high degree of setting introduces a risk of complete loss of clamping force, leading to failures of often important structural connections on the truck.

DAF measures setting of paint systems with an in-house developed method. A new method is proposed that would save a lot of time in both sample preparation and execution of the test while also potentially increasing the quality of the result. Before this method can be implemented however it would need to be validated by comparing with the old method on a variety of different paint systems. This includes statistical analysis and a translation to the actual effect on the clamping force in a bolted joint. Furthermore additional proposals for (literature-based) improvements on the testing method are more than welcome.

For this internship we are looking for a student with the following profile:

• You are an HBO or WO student in the direction of Material sciences, Automotive, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering with an affinity for materials
• You are analytically strong and good with data.
• You work accurate
• You have good communication skills in English and Dutch
• You are independent and responsible
