Description company:
DAF Trucks N.V. is a technology company and the premier commercial vehicle manufacturer in Europe. DAF is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PACCAR Inc, the global technology leader in the design and manufacturing of premium quality light, medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. PACCAR also designs and manufactures advanced diesel engines, provides financial services and information technology and distributes truck parts related to its principal business.

Description department:
Within PACCAR Inc., DAF Trucks Global Engine Development is the center of competence for engine and aftertreatment development. In our state-of-art engine development center we develop engine families for future regulations, for DAF, Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks. Our engines and trucks are best-in-class products in the transportation world, being always driven by providing environmentally friendly products with highest reliability and best cost-effectiveness for our customers.

The Engine Integration & Validation department is responsible for definition, integration, verification, and validation of engine and after treatment families towards performance requirements. The department is split into 8 groups and the EAS Performance group holds a vacancy for a graduation project.

What are you going to do:
In current engine-aftertreatment technology the deNOx catalyst (SCR) is the last (furthest downstream) component in a series of catalyst bricks. The SCR being last in line is disadvantageous for its heat-up time after engine cold start. To reduce heat-up time, future aftertreatment system concepts consider configurations where an (additional) SCR is placed as first catalyst brick.

Goal of this assignment is to come up with a control concept for an upstream SCR (controlling urea dosing). Target is to control urea dosing such that highest NOx conversion rates are achieved, at minimum slip of excessive NH3. Challenges include fouling of SCR substrate due to engine-out HC's/carbonaceous materials and strategies to counteract this. It is a full time internship.
